The Nikon 18-35mm AF-D ED IF is a true performer, offers excellent resolution at a fraction of the cost of 17-35mm AF-s. You can get this lens used in excellent condition for around $250.  The slower aperture can be compensated by a decent dedicated flash or a strobe.
