Efficiently utilizing limited workspace.

As a product photographer, you are often faced with the challenge of limited workspace, most often times, limited prop choices.  I was given a (really tiny!) piece of wood and to be expected to produce a 30″ print of a pair of our new style cufflinks fully blown up for the upcoming trade show.

The key is to find the right angle that utilizes most of the useable wood texture, combined with photoshop’s new powerful Content Aware Fill function, the final result came out better than expected.

Baxter with Cufflinks

Tried something fun with Baxter in our office, we put a Steak Cufflinks on his paw and he hold it for just a few seconds for me to snap a photo and later edit it.

Included the original shot for comparison.

Playing with Letters

My co-worker Sarah just recently got engaged, and she is in need of a cool post card to mail out.  We saw a similar scramble ideal on the internet, improvised it, and turned it into our own work, using our scramble cufflinks and her own engagement ring.  it turned out to be pretty darn cool.

Next, I photographed and arranged our letter cufflinks for our upcoming 2012 catalog.

Light Painting at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, AR

Update: One of the image I took during the trip has been chosen as Art and Seek’s Flickr Photo of The Week.  Click the link below to see it!

http://artandseek.net/2011/11/30/flickr-photo-of-the-week-157/

We took a trip to Hot Springs, AR, and was lucky to visit the Garvan Woodland Gardens “Lights on Landscape” event, where they decorate all the trees and plants in the garden with millions of LED lights for viewing at night.  Below are some photos from the night lighting at the garden, my images are mostly abstract, but it is a event definitely worth going to.

Small Fire At My Apartment Complex

Fire started for no apparent reason at one of the buildings at Cambridge Apartment  Homes in Dallas (where I live). Firefighters trying to axe and saw out the roof and put off the fire in the void between 3rd floor ceiling and roof.  They could not figure out the cause of the fire and said there is no wires or anything in the void in between.

There are a total of 9 vehicles came to the apartment complex, the fire is relatively small and was put out almost immediately.

How better photography could change your brand image, especially in online retailing.

Photography is a key factor in online retailing business.  Choosing a bad photographer could literally ruin your reputation and drive customers away from you.

Taken for example, a recent photo retouching request I was assigned to for some high value designer cufflinks.  The photography is so so,  the path cutout was okay, and it was just dull and seems unedited.   Somehow the designer decided to just use these un-edited images for all their online presentations.  It took me a good amount of time to at least correct them as best I can, so we can use them for our online product page.

You be the judge, were the original images good enough for publishing, or my edited versions (diagonally placed) better?

Sprint iPhone 4S Battery Life (Hint: Can Last A Full Day No Problem)

So how does the battery life of Apple’s iPhone 4S on Sprint’s CDMA network perform?

Read below to find out!

Here is my usage very first day till next morning.  Phone was charged to 100% then used regularly till it died at 1%.

Only about 20-30min talk time, and mostly just surf and netflix.  While on netflex, it’s amazing that the phone only used about 4-5% of battery for half an hour of video…  The thing I find it uses most battery is when I did intensive wifi and 3G speed tests thing droped 10% in less than 20 min (which you can see screenshot of the test result on my website here:

And some videos I’ve made compareing my old captivate and new iphone 4s sprint version)
watch?v=WSsa50U0FfI&feature=feedu

3G speed test, AT&T vs Sprint, Indoor, less than ideal signals.
watch?v=BjPlN19Bawk&feature=feedu

PS, I always thought sprint had better 3G than AT&T, but I guess not, it is a tad bit slower, however, coverage is definitely better at my office location (4 bars on Sprint vs 1-2 bars on AT&T… now just need to wait for the LTE deployment next year and the iPhone 5……

I hope this helps you guys in making your purchasing decisions.

Update

After a day of use, battery life has improved somewhat, lasting me at least 1.5 days of regular usage (internet browsing, maps, fb, talk and txt, no push emails though) See screenshot below:

Sprint’s iPhone 4S Does Have A Micro SIM Slot! – But It’s Carrier Locked :(

Despite recent articles claiming that Sprint’s newly released CDMA iPhone 4S will not have a removeable Micro SIM slot, the rumors are wrong! My Sprint iPhone 4S does come with a removable SIM slot. However, it is entirely up to Sprint or Unlocking community’s mercy to have the phone Unlocked to be used aboard with local mobile carriers.

Update:  I tried to put a AT&T Micro SIM card in the slot, it appears that the phone is indeed carrier locked and will ask you to activate the phone at Sprint store with the foreign SIM card.  Also when plugged and connected to iTunes with AT&T SIM on Sprint iPhone 4S, iTunes will simply tell you that the phone is SIM Locked and won’t sync the phone!  So for now the SIM slot is a useless function on Sprint iPhone 4S

Some additional views of the iPhone 4S with a compact kick stand for watching videos on the move.

Food & Cooking

Was invited by friends to their house for some home made beijing style Zhajiang noodle, tasty.

This past Monday was also the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival, where families gather and eat mooncakes.  I made my own Suzhou Style Pork Mooncake for the first time, and it was a lot of fun.  The ingredients were really simple, but the preparation took long.  About 2.5Hr from start to finish.

Will try to make more baked dessert in the near future, it is a lot of fun.

Engraveable Items Mockup

I’ve been asked to setup a shot for the engraveable items that we carry.  So we got money clip, tie bar and cufflinks all in production and ready to shoot, but we don’t have any sample yet for the engraveable charm, I have to setup the shot with a temporary charm and replaced the surface with an existing cufflink surface shot.

This is the setup

This is the image I’ve used to replace charm surface

This is the final outcome.
